Game Day 2009
Written by Dave "Doctor" Gonzo
Tuesday, 03 November 2009

The big races:

  • NJ-Gov: MSNBC projected Chris Christie (R) at 10:15pm EST over Jon Corzine (D) and Chris Daggett (I) -- too close to call
  • VA-Gov: MSNBC projected Bob McDonnell (R) winner over Creigh Deeds (D) at 7:55pm EST -- McDonnell had been expected to win
  • NY-23: Bill Owens (D) v. Doug Hoffman (Teabagger and Carpetbagger) v. Dede Scozzafava (R, dropped out, endorsed Owens) -- too close to call, and 11,000 absentee ballots will be counted Wednesday
  • NYC-Mayor: MSNBC projected Mike Bloomberg ($$$) winner over Bill Thompson (D) and half a dozen other small-party candidates at 9:40pm EST -- Bloomberg was expected to win handily, but the results were far tiughter than pollsters had projected

A few others to watch:

  • Seattle-Mayor: Joe Mallahan (R, millionaire) v, Mike McGinn (D, environmentalist)
  • CA-10: John Garamendi (D) likely to beat David Harmer (R)
  • WA-Ref71: State gay rights initiative APPROVED
  • ME-Q1: State gay marriage initiative
  • CO-Init Local: Marijuana possession initiative APPROVED

And then there's this from Drudgico: Conservatives to challenge a dozen GOP candidates next year!

Breaking: Scozzafava drops out of NY-23 special election
Written by Gene Gaudette
Saturday, 31 October 2009

Breaking on MSNBC, and at Drudgico (they're using the word "suspended" to describe Republican Dede Scozzafava's move, citing cash flow issues among others). Gut analysis: advantage to wingnut carpetbagger candidate Doug Hoffman. But that may be premature: DCIndy reports that NY Independence Party chairman Frank MacKay has endorsed Democrat Bill Owens. Jake McIntyre at dKos sees this as a move to "sav[e] face for petrified Republicans." More details as we get them.

A Censored Headline and Why It Matters: German High Court Outlaws Electronic Voting
Written by Michael Collins
Tuesday, 20 October 2009

A German high court found that electronic voting was unacceptable and anti democratic — and, as Michael Collins demonstrates, America's corporate-controlled media decided it didn't pass the "newsworthy" test.  Welcome to the nexus of privatized elections and censored news.

I couldn't agree more:

When that recipient happens to be the leader of a nation - representing his country all over the world - then that honor is also bestowed on the citizens of that nation.

Blowing the Whistle on Eliminationists
Written by Gene Gaudette
Monday, 28 September 2009

Props to blogger GottaLaff at The Political Carnival for blowing the whistle on a Facebook poll that asked, "Should Obama be killed?" The story got picked up by PlumLine and the Boston Globe, both of whom report that the Secret Service is looking into the matter. But I have to ask myself -- who should be more worried: the person who posted the poll, or all the people who answered "Yes"?

President Carter Is Right
Written by Dave "Doctor" Gonzo
Wednesday, 16 September 2009

The institutional right's designated whiners have their panties in a bunch over comments made by President Jimmy Carter during an interview with NBC News' Brian Williams:

Visit msnbc.com for MSNBC Breaking News

President Carter is right. Take, for example, the so-called "Tea Party Express." One of their leaders, Mark Williams, dug a hole for himself and his movement a couple of nights ago on CNN:

I can remember a day when the Tea Party Express called themselves the White Citizens' Councils. 'Nuff said…

Ted Kennedy, 1932-2009
Written by The Editors
Wednesday, 26 August 2009

Ted Kennedy has died at age 77 following a struggle with brain cancer. Both lengthy obituaries in the New York Times and the Boston Globe are well worth your time.

Via TMW's Greg Sargent comes this quote, from one year ago today:

“This is the cause of my life. New hope that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American - north, south, east, west, young, old - will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege.”

You're likely to see some or all of that barnburner of a speech Kennedy delivered to last year's Democratic Convention among today's news coversge – but even better was the remarkable speech he delivered to the 1980 convention, "The Dream Shall Never Die," which you can see at cspan.org .
